Every second semester in every session, the students of Trinity University get a lecture-free week packed with a lot of activities decided by the students themselves through a representative committee. This lecture free week is tagged “Students week”. From the 30th of May 2023 to the 3rd of June 2023, Trinity University had her 3rd edition of the Students’ week since the inception of the school. This particular post is going to take you through the activities of this year’s students’ week through the eyes of a young student blogger.
The theme for the first day was “Old school day/costume day”. Students had been anticipating this day as soon as it was announced. We all wanted to see how creative Trinity University students could be. They did not disapoint. The creativity was mind- blowing. I saw different types of village headmasters and headmistress, I saw pregnant women, I saw market women with their absurdly painted faces which was meant to be pass as makeup, I saw secondary school girls who actually went out of their way to get matching school uniforms, I saw Nolly babes, I saw a next to perfect Joker costume among other creative outfits.
We had a talk on finances and later there were sporting matches. Two faculties ( Arts, Management and Social sciences and Basic, Medical and Applied Sciences) competed against each other in both male and female capacities. They played sports like football, volleyball, basketball and table tennis. The Arts girls took the cup in the first basketball match with a score of 30 against the score of 13 of the science girls.
Still In the Spirit of old school day, we had an old school-themed movie night where we watched “ The Gods Must Be Crazy”. We also had old schools snacks like shapes biscuits, tattoo chewing gums, gin gin, parago, telephone juice, tasty time, choci choci etc.
The next day we were asked to dress up in our Trinity University Customised sweatshirts on Jean trousers. We went out for a community walk where we shared flyers to people and told them about the school. We then got back to school and had a Fertility talk. There were more sports completions with the art girls once again taking the lead.
Later that evening, the school’s drama team presented a stage play. That was the highlight of the week for me because I wrote the script and directed the play with a friend of mine. I also acted in he play and I loved my character. The play was a success and the team got a lot of positive comments at the end of the play.
Day 3 was Departmental Day. My department ( mass communication) choose black and blue as the dress code and we all turned up in our numbers. We had a talk from Damilola Oduolowu ( a media personnel) which was very engaging and insightful. We then played some games amongst ourselves and had a good time. The event ended with presentation of awards to the excos and to some students. We had light refreshment and called it a day.
That night was bonfire night. We all sat around a fire, vibing to good music and having fun. We had some crazy games like bottle flipping, spicy noodles competition, eba and soup competition among others.
Day 4 was cultural day. We all came out in our various cultural attires and everyone really made an effort to look traditional. I saw the outfits of the Edo culture, the Yoruba culture, the Igbo culture, the Ibibio culture, the Hausa culture among others. We also had an interfaculty debate on the topic “ Government should regulate the use of artificial intelligence “. Both teams argued intelligently and at the end of the day, the faculty of Art won the debate. We had a talk on Drug abuse, Mental health and Depression delivered by Dr. Miracle Ihuoma who is a practising psychologist and life coach. We then had a cultural display from one of the school’s dance groups after which we all danced in our various cultural attires.
That night, we had our pageantry/ talent night. The pageantry is a tradition where the students contesting for the categories of Mr Tu, Miss TU, Face of TU, Mr Sports came out to display their talents, display their culture, give us their manifesto and answer questions after which the winners would be selected. We were also entertained with a display of various talents from the students. It was a fun night altogether.
The next day was the Treasure hunt day. Gifts were scattered around the school and we had to use clues to hunt for them. The clues were tricky and we had a hard time figuring some of them out. We found a lot of nice things however. Later that night, we had our dinner night.
The students of Trinity University know how to serve when it comes to good looks and unique dress sense. The outfits were really classy, expensive and topnotch. We rounded up the student week with a Thanksgiving service the following Sunday. The third edition of the Students’ week was in all honestly a huge success.
